How to Create a New Gap Analysis
To start a new gap analysis, click New Link Plan on the Link Planner dashboard. A 3-step wizard will open.
Step 1: Enter your domain
Type your domain in the field. No https:// or www needed — just the bare domain.
Below the input you'll see your current usage:
- Free tier: "2 of 3 analyses used in August · Resets Sep 1"
- Paid plan: "5 analyses run · Unlimited on your plan"
If you've hit the free limit, the button will be grayed out. Either wait for the monthly reset or upgrade your plan.
Click Find Competitors. Link Planner will pull up competitors automatically — takes a few seconds.
Step 2: Pick your competitors
You'll see a list of auto-discovered competitors showing their Domain Rank (DR) and how many links they share with your domain. The top 3 are pre-selected.
From here you can:
- Check or uncheck any competitor in the list
- Add one manually by typing a domain into the "Add competitor manually" field and clicking Add
- Select up to 5 competitors total
A couple of things to know:
- You can't add your own domain as a competitor
- No duplicates
- The Add button disables once you hit 5
Click Next when you're done.
Step 3: Confirm and start
Review your setup before running:
- Your domain — the site being analyzed
- Competitors — the domains you picked (click X to remove any)
- Intersection mode — controls how gap domains are found:
- Partial — includes domains linking to any of your competitors (more results, broader coverage)
- All — only includes domains linking to every competitor you selected (fewer results, higher confidence)
Partial is the default and works well for most use cases.
Click Start Analysis. You'll get a confirmation and land back on the dashboard where you can watch the job move through its stages: Pending → Analyzing → Enriching → Scoring → Completed.
Results are usually ready in 1–3 minutes.
